The popular seaside resort of Playa de Aro is located on the Costa Brava in the northern Spanish region of Catalonia. The name of the town is often spelled as Platja d'Aro, the Catalan version, or even Castell-Platja d'Aro, including the name of the original historic village, Castell d'Aro. An ideal destination for families, thanks to its wide choice of safe and clean beaches as well as other tourist attractions, the inland areas around the medieval Castell d'Aro are also popular with visitors who are more interested in culture and history than working on their tan.
There are eight beaches along the coastline, which belongs to the resort of Playa de Aro, each with its own charms but all sharing a commitment to the environment; every one of the beaches has been awarded the Blue Flag for water cleanliness. From the tiny cove of Cala Pedrosa in the south to the unspoilt Cala Belladona in the south, there is more than enough space for all Playa de Aro's tourists, even in the height of summer.
La Platja Gran is the largest and busiest beach, located right in the centre of the resort close to most of the tourist accommodation. It has all the amenities you would expect, such as showers, toilets and a lifeguard service, and is also backed by a pleasant promenade and a huge variety of beach bars and restaurants.
Playa de Aro has its own small water park on the outskirts, Aquadiver, but a larger and better-equipped attraction, called Water World, is located a few kilometres away in Lloret-de-Mar. The resort is also home to the Costa Brava's largest amusement park, the sprawling 'Magic Park' which features fairground rides, stalls and even live entertainment on an evening.
The original village of Castell d'Aro is located just a couple of kilometres inland from the resort, easily within cycling or even walking distance if you haven't hired a car. It is the perfect place to escape the noise and bustle of Playa de Aro for a few hours, wandering the narrow streets and admiring the picturesque houses and chapels.
Further afield, the historic city of Girona is a popular day-trip destination for visitors to Playa de Aro, and even Barcelona is only about 80 kilometres north. Both are well served by public transport if you don't want to drive.
