The small Mallorcan resort of Puerto de Andratx, sometimes spelled Puerto de Andraitx, is located in the southwestern corner of the island, in an area that has remained unspoilt and quiet despite the increase in tourist numbers.
In fact, the area around the more historic inland town of Andratx and its seaside neighbour is so remote that many of the celebrities who enjoy visiting Mallorca have their villas and summer homes in this part of the island, including Michael Douglas and Claudia Schiffer. The coastline is wild and rugged, meaning that sandy beaches are a rarity, but there are some excellent examples on the coast either side of Puerto de Andratx as well as interesting destinations for day trips and excursions.
Puerto de Andratx was once just a small fishing village and though some fishing boats still leave from the new marina, you are more likely to see million dollar yachts berthed for the night than typical Mallorcan vessels.
Home to some great fish restaurants, the main beach in Puerto de Andratx, Ses Bassettes, is only about 30 metres in length and gets very busy in the summer months. However, it is only a short drive to more traditional seaside resorts like Camp de Mar with its tourist amenities, hotels and family entertainment, while if you are prepared to head even further off the beaten track there are other unspoilt beaches to be found in the surrounding area.
The beach at Cala Fonoll is surrounded by high cliffs and can only be reached via a steep path while the tiny shingle beach at Cala Marmassen is perfect for snorkelling and diving. The sandy beach at Cala Llamp is easier to reach by boat than by car, although you can walk across the sand dunes from the town of the same name if you want some peace and quiet, even in the summer months.
The historic small town of Andratx is located inland from Puerto de Andratx and is a great day trip destination for those holidaying in this part of Mallorca. A picturesque old town, made up of steep cobbled streets and pretty cottages, is also home to a 19th century castle, Son Mas.
One of the towers of the castle, the Sagrament Tower, dates from an earlier 15th century structure, while a tower of a different kind can be seen in the Colom area of the town. So Na Gaiana's tower was built to protect the town from pirate raids, along with other fortification of which only a few stretches of the town wall remain standing.
