The modern, purpose-built resort of Sa Coma is situated on the east coast of Mallorca, around 65 kilometres and two hours by coach from the international airport in Palma. The amenities in the resort are definitely aimed more at families, especially those with young children, though it is only a short taxi ride to the larger and livelier resorts of Cala Millor and Porto Cristo if you want to have a more exciting night out.
Sa Coma is right next door to another popular Mallorcan resort, S'Illot – in fact, the two are now almost just one larger town thanks to increased development in recent years. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere and a little bit of a historical feel to your holiday destination, then you might prefer to spend more of your time in S'Illot.
The main beach in Sa Coma is a wide and long stretch of sand with all the usual tourist amenities such as beach bars, water sports and sun loungers and parasols for hire. The promenade stretches south towards S'Illot and the smaller beach of Cala Moraia, which is more sheltered and popular with snorkellers and divers. Heading into S'Illot you will find a very different type of resort, with more good quality seafood restaurants and traditional Mallorcan fishing boats.
As well as the usual range of golf courses that can be found near any Spanish resort, there are other attractions aimed at younger members of the family on the outskirts of Sa Coma and S'Illot. On the way to Cala Millor is the Auto Safari Zoo where visitors can choose to drive their own car around the open-air zoo or take the tourist train, while the Punta de n'Amer headland is now a protected nature reserve, with a pleasant 45-minute walk to the ancient watchtower of Castell de n'Amer.
If you have hired a car there other attractions further inland from Sa Coma which are worth taking the time to visit. Public transport is infrequent and unreliable, but many of the package tour companies also run their own trips to popular attractions like the Caves of Hams and the more famous Caves of Drach.
The Caves of Drach are home to one of the largest underground lakes in the world, at over 30 metres wide and nearly 180 metres long, and you can even take a trip on a rowing boat! The huge cavern, which houses the lake, also hosts classical music concerts every day in the summer months.
