Valencia is the largest city on the Costa Blanca, on Spain's east coast, and is the capital of the region. Home to the traditional Spanish dish of paella, Valencia is also a popular day trip destination for those staying in the holiday resorts of the Costa Blanca. There are more than enough sites and attractions in this vibrant city to keep visitors entertained for more than just a day, whether you are interested in art and history or museums on a wide variety of subjects. The city is even home to several beaches, all within walking distance of tourist areas like the old town, allowing you to spend the morning sightseeing and the afternoon relaxing in the Mediterranean sun.

Valencia's old town, often referred to as the Barrio del Carmen or simply El Carmen, is a picturesque maze of narrow streets and cobbled courtyards, all now filled with pavement cafés, craft shops and restaurants serving paella. The Cathedral of Valencia is a must-see, not only for the impressive building itself, but also for the breathtaking view from the top of the bell tower, provided you have the energy to climb all those stairs!

Valencia's main square, the heart of the city and setting for many of the regional festivals, is the Plaza de la Virgen. Home to beautiful historic and religious buildings, the square is also a popular place to stop for a drink or something to eat in one of its many bars and restaurants. Another excellent view of the city can be found at the top of the 12th century Torres de Seranos, old watchtowers at the northern edge of the old quarter and part of the now ruined defensive ramparts.

Valencia is well known for its vast number and variety of museums; as well as the usual art galleries, featuring works by local artists, and archaeological museums featuring ancient artefacts found in nearby digs, you can also visit a bullfighting museum and a museum dedicated to the local custom of “falle”.

The most visited and most impressive museum is actually a collection of four different buildings in one complex; the City of Arts and Science features a concert hall, a cinema showing educational, IMAX and 3D films, an aquarium and an interactive science museum. Highlights include the laser show at L'Hemispheric and the underwater restaurant at the aquarium.
