The picturesque Vejer de la Frontera up on a hill is made up of an old medieval section of town and the new 'oueblos blancos' areas. As well as a church and various historical buildings including notable archways, there is also a castle slightly hidden away from the town; a moorish built 'alcazaba' dating back to the eleventh century, however the castle has become residential. Like several towns in Spain, the running of the bulls festival is held annually
Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Vejer de la Frontera is situated only a few kilometres away from the beaches of El Palmar, Trafalgar Bay and Los Caños de Meca. Sports around this area include surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. Two Natural Parks are also close by - the Las Breñas and the Marismas, both recommended to tourists as they offer great walking trails with a large variety of bird life. The local countryside also has several walking trails.
