Turkey's Aegean Region runs the length of the country's Aegean coastline and stretches inland for some distance. Home to some of the best Turkish beaches and most popular tourist resorts, the region also has plenty of historical and cultural attractions for visitors who are more interested in sightseeing than sunbathing. As in other parts of Turkey, the country's ancient history isn't too far away, with most established towns and villages boasting their own ruins or, at the very least, a few archaeological artefacts.

The Aegean Region's main town is the bustling coastal city of Izmir, home to some of the country's best museums, a picturesque old quarter and close to some of the best beaches in Turkey. Many are within driving distance of the city centre and public transport is quite regular in the summer months too. In Izmir itself, the old town is well worth exploring, including its many religious buildings many of which are very opulently decorated.

The town's archaeological museum is one of the most comprehensive in Turkey, while public and private galleries display the best Turkish art. The hill known as Belkahve is the highest point in Izmir and offers a spectacular view over the city and the nearby Cesme peninsula. It is here that some of the best and most beautiful beaches in Turkey are found, many of which are popular with locals as well as tourists.

The Northern Aegean area is home to some impressive ancient sites, such as Bergama and Foca. The latter town is also a popular small seaside resort and both attract thousands of visitors each year to visit their ancient buildings. Cannakale is at one side of the narrow strait between the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara, with regular ferry crossings over to the side. Nearby is the First World War battlefield of Gallipoli with its many monuments to those who died there.

There are few large towns in the Interior Aegean region, though most still have impressive ancient and historic structures to visit. Walking is a pleasant way to explore this part of rural Turkey in spring and autumn, when temperatures are cooler. Finally, the Southern Aegean boasts two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; the Temple of Artemis in the modern town of Selcuk and the Mausoleum of Mausolus near Bodrum. Bodrum is another popular seaside resort, which is one of the main Turkish destinations for European tourists.
