The Republic Of Peru is a country in the northwest corner of South America with its capital at Lima. It has borders with Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and Chile, has the Pacific Ocean to the west and sits upon the Andes mountain range.
Peru has a history of human settlement, which can be traced back roughly 15,000 years. In particular there still remain ruins from The Inca Empire, one of the most famous and mysterious civilizations in history. Their existence is still marked by aqueducts, terraced buildings, etc and historic tours are one of the main reasons for tourists to visit. The Inca city of Machu Picchu is probably the most significant historical destination. However the giant chalk drawings of the Nazca Desert plains may be considered the most mysterious landmarks.
The Amazon rainforest covers 60% of Peru's surface. This ensures that there are plenty of opportunities for tours geared towards wildlife. Some fascinating species would include the jaguar, howler monkey, poison arrow frog or the bald parrot. It is reported that between 1999 and 2009 a new species was discovered in the Amazon once every three days. The only practical way to enter the area is by aircraft, but once in a riverboat tour provides a comfortable and leisurely means of viewing the scenery.
