The Bolivarian Republic Of Venezuela is a tropical country situated at the north end of South America.
It is situated very close to the Equator and so the climate is mainly tropical, but the elevation of the land provides a certain cooling factor. In the lowlands the average temperature is 28 degrees C, but only 8 degrees C in the highlands.
Venezuela can offer at least two outstanding natural features. The first is Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world with a drop of 978m. Access can be long and difficult, involving a long canoe trip followed by some hiking. A helicopter tour may be a much easier option. The other is the Orinoco River, the second longest in South America at 1,300 miles. Home to the Amazon River dolphin and the almost extinct Orinoco crocodile, no trip to Venezuela is complete without an Orinoco river tour.
Other animal species, not necessarily in the same region, include the anaconda, spectacled bear, jaguar, puma, piranha, giant river otters, sloths and manatees.
For the undecided tourist, the capital city of Caracas may be as good a place as any to start. The city is jam-packed with museums, theatres and historic landmarks to see. It is also situated conveniently on the north coast.
Situated close to Venezuela's north coastline, the island offers clean beaches, clear water and picturesque scenery. Nightlife, entertainment and shopping opportunities are also plentiful.
