The Cook Islands are a cluster of fifteen small islands to the east of New Zealand. Sometimes referred to as "the best kept secret of the South Pacific", they are one of the more obscure holiday destinations in the region.
The island of Rarotonga is the central focus point where most of the population is concentrated and is the base for the international airport. The island of Aitutaki follows closely behind in terms of development and popularity. About 90% of tourists to the Cook Islands are destined for Rarotonga.
The climate varies between moderate and tropical, on average a little cooler than most of the South Pacific. The range of temperature is surprisingly narrow; from 25 degrees C in winter to 29 degrees C in summer.
Although the expanse of ocean between the islands is huge, the domestic airline Air Rarotonga provides regular flights between them at reasonable prices. Some of the more remote, uninhabited islands may be difficult to access but exploring a place devoid of humanity may be a very rewarding experience for some.
