Tahiti is the largest island in the archipelago of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. This cluster of islands is extremely remote, way out in the Pacific Ocean and 3,000 miles east of Australia; the nearest large land mass. The official language is French. The landscape is largely mountainous with surrounding coral reefs.
The island is served by Faa'a International Airport in the capital city of Papeete. Temperatures range from 21 to 31 degrees C. November to April is the rainy season, the rest of the year being the dry season.
A large portion of the island's interior is uninhabited and so is ideal for those who like wilderness exploration.
The list of possible water activities is huge. Scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, windsurfing and kite boarding are a few choice examples. Marine wildlife includes a variety of sharks, whales and rays.
Inland activities include camping, walking tours, equestrian tours, helicopter tours, bus tours and golfing. For general nightlife and entertainment, the capital Papeete is probably the best option. It is buzzing with bars, nightclubs and a variety of cafes some of which even offer live entertainment.
