Connecticut is a state within the region of New England in the Northeastern U.S. bordering Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York State and the Long Island Sound. Connecticut has been home to many famous writers, musicians, actors and politicians including Kevin Bacon, Michael J. Fox, 50 Cent, Moby, George W. Bush, and Marilyn Monroe to name but a few. Writer Mark Twain published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin while living in the state capital, Hartford.
Connecticut has a range of attractions to enjoy including the Maritime Aquarium with a range of animals to see and enjoy such as the River Otter, Jellyfish, Sharks, Rays, Sea Turtles and Squid. A touch tank is also available allowing visitors to touch Green and Horseshoe Crabs, Sea Stars and many more.
Connecticut has a range of museums to visit including the Chaplin, Lockwood-Mathews Mansion and the Connecticut Historical Society museums. History lovers will also enjoy the Mystic Seaport, a maritime museum with exhibits dedicated to America and the sea, and offers its visitors the chance to take a tour aboard a variety of historical vessels including a cruise along the Mystic River onboard a steamboat from 1908. A planetarium is also on the site with play areas for children and events held throughout the year.

Zoos and Aquariums
Beardsley Zoo is a great place to visit for any holidaymaker. The zoo specialises in North and South American species but there is a range of animals to see including Wolves at the Wolf Observation Facility, Alligators, Amur Tigers, Bison, Foxes, Lynx as well as themed buildings like the Reptile House and the Rainforest Building, with monkeys, ocelot and tropical birds.
Mystic Aquarium offers a range of shows and animals. As well as Penguins, Turtles and Sea lions, the Aquarium provides a range of educational attractions such as the ‘Critter Cam’; this allows visitors to see the world as the animals see it. The Mystic Aquarium offers a ‘birds of pray show’ in the summer and an aviary allowing visitors to see and touch the birds. The Aquarium also hosts Sea Lion shows, theatres and much more.
Theme Parks
Lake Compounce is one of the United States’ oldest amusement parks and is continuously updated over the years; this is made clear by their latest thrill ride, ‘The Revolution’ which was opened in 2011. The park has a variety of other attractions and roller coasters, including a water park, shows and rides specially for kids to enjoy.
Quassy Amusement Park is over 100 years old and is still a popular attraction for visitors today particularly those with young children. The Park offers many fairground favourites like the Carousel, bumper cars and fun-slides. The park also has its own beach and waterpark.
Museums
The Submarine Force Museum offers a unique and interesting opportunity to take a tour aboard the worlds first nuclear powered submarine, the USS Nautilus. The museum also has a replica of the Turtle, built in 1775 by David Bushnell, it was the first submarine used in combat as well as World War 2 midget submarines and tens of thousands of documents and photographs related to submarines and their development. There is also an original copy of ‘20,000 leagues under the sea’, by Jules Verne from 1870.
Stepping Stones Museum for Children is designed to teach young children about a range of subjects in a fun and interesting way. The Energy Lab is a new exhibit teaches children about energy in a hands-on way, showing them how we get energy from the wind and the sun and teaching them where our natural resources come from and why they are limited. There are many more exhibits to explore making for a fun day out for families with young children.

Climate
Connecticut’s climate is humid in summer with temperatures averaging over 30°C, in winter temperatures drop to below freezing and there tends to be a blanket of snow. Thunderstorms are frequent in the state during the summer months but extremes of weather are very rare.
